Helping the Helpers: Kaona Healing Hui
Program Overview
If you helped with the wildfires, you deserve this free event October 28, at Lumeria Maui Retreat Center in Makawao. The pain of the fires is not something we can simply put behind us. It is something we can deepen into - if we extend our roots farther into our Mother Earth. She, of course, is also our Spaceship Earth. Kaona means "deeper layers of understanding". We begin with grounding with astronomer Harriet Witt, Somatic Integration with Lisa Cary, expressive art therapy with Dr. Valerie Simonsen, body work, flower essence support, organic meals, and sacred space that facilitates post-traumatic growth.
Quoting Angela Scanlon, "In a world with a permanent filter, we are keen to peel back the layers.” Maui's own Woody Harrelson says, "A grownup is a child with layers on." Participants will peel back the layers and reconnect with the child within. They will tap into their resilience and newfound strengths thus revealing themselves to deeper insight, meaning, and personal development in their lives.
Goals
To provide a safe, secure and confidential environment with caretakers to serve Frontline Workers, Healthcare Providers, Educators, and Community leaders.
Outcomes
Enhanced Emotional Resilience: Participants will acquire the tools and techniques to process grief, trauma, and overwhelm effectively. Through trauma-informed care and integrative health practices, individuals will gain emotional stability and increased capacity to manage the emotional aftermath of the disaster.
Physical Well-being: Integrative health and medicine services provided at the clinics, such as body work, naturopathic medicine, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and nutrition counseling, will contribute to the improvement of physical health. These services will address physical ailments resulting from stress and trauma, promoting overall well-being.
Positive Behavioral Changes: Participants will adopt healthier behaviors and coping strategies, enabling them to navigate the complexities of long-term recovery. We anticipate a shift towards healthier lifestyles and stress management techniques that individuals can incorporate into their daily lives.
Promotion of Growth Mindset: Our clinics will actively foster a growth mindset among participants. By providing a supportive environment and evidence-based therapies like guided meditation, Somatic Integration Experiences, and yoga, we aim to instill hope, resilience, and a belief in the possibility of personal growth, even in the face of adversity.
Access to Trauma-Informed Care: People will benefit from the unique approach of integrative health and medicine, which recognizes that trauma resides in the body. By helping individuals feel safe and secure, we create the conditions necessary for them to engage in therapeutic conversations and process their experiences.
Nervous System Regulation: Integrative health practices empower individuals with practical tools for nervous system regulation. Techniques like mindfulness, TaiChi, and Qigong will assist in reducing stress and anxiety and restoring a sense of balance, which is crucial for recovery.
Long-Term Support: Recognizing that the recovery process after a major climate disaster can extend over a decade, our clinics will serve as a sustained source of support. We aim to empower fire survivors, first responders, and healthcare workers to cope with the long road of rebuilding and emotional support that extends for months and years.
Facilitation of Post-Traumatic Growth: Through trauma-informed integrative health care, we seek to catalyze post-traumatic growth. We believe that, despite the challenges posed by trauma, individuals can find deeper insight, meaning, and personal development in their lives. Our clinics will help individuals tap into their resilience and newfound strengths.
